fredthebear: In the final position, White is threatening mate in one but resigns anyway. Black will soon use Qf4+ to exchange off the queens and avoid being checkmated. Black wants to exchange off the rooks as well. The 4-2 queenside pawn majority will tell the difference.

Upon further inspection, specifically 39.Kh1 or Kh2 is forced. Then, the White queen must painfully give herself up after 39...Rg6, which not only prevents the support mate by Qxg7#, it threatens a support mate of it's own with Qxg2#.

But NO! The forcing deflection sacrifice 40.Rh8+! KxRh8 41.QxRg6 not only saves the White royalty, it revives it's own mate threat.

So what does Black do? Surely Mr. Short would see the back rank deflection sacrifice coming ahead of time, use the other rook instead and play 39...Rg5; it's a game clincher. White's problems on the g-file return causing capitulation. The question of "Which rook?" often looms so large in the game of chess.
