THE MAJOR TOURNEY.>

At board 1, Mr. Higgs, of Echuca, was paired with Mr. Lampe, of Ballarat. The former had the move, and soon acquired a winning position, Mr Lampe offering him an opportunity of forcing a mate by the sacrifice of his Queen. This chance, however, Mr Higgs was unfortunate enough to overlook, and subsequently he allowed the advantage of the game to be transferred to his opponent, ultimately laying himself open to a forced mate in two moves. It is only just to observe that, although Mr. Higgs was the loser, he played some excellent moves, and showed that he possesses talents for chess which practice with skilful experts would certainly develop.>

Time:- Mr. Higgs, 1h. 26m.; Mr. Lampe, 1h. 21m.>
