Jul-19-13  optimal play: <<<<<<THE CENTENNIAL CHESS CONGRESS.>

THE MAJOR TOURNEY.>

At board 2 the fight was... stubborn. Mr Stanley, who had the move, chose the King’s Bishop's Opening to which Mr Charlick rejoined with the Berlin Defence.

After a time Mr Stanley forced Mr Charlick to weaken his centre, on which the attack of the Victorian representative was directed, and for a while Mr Charlick had a difficult game to play. In the end, however, after a series of exchanges, the positions were left so equal that on Mr Charlick's proposal, Mr Stanley accepted a draw.

In accordance with the conditions of the tourney, these gentlemen will meet again, on which occasion Mr. Charlick will have the first move.>

Time - Mr Stanley, 1h. 48min. , Mr Charllck, 1h. 46min.>

- The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.) issue Thursday 18 October 1888>
