At board 4 Mr Brocklebank played Petroff's Defence, to which Mr Lampe rejoined with Petroff's own move of 3. P to Q 4. Afterwards, however, Mr Lampe pursued the attack in a somewhat erratic manner, and Mr Brocklebank, replying with force and precision, soon secured an advantage in position. In the fourth round of the chess tourney to-day Brocklebank played the Petroff defence against Lampe, who made a poor stand.> The scores stand thus : —
