Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-19-13  optimal play: <<<<<<THE CENTENNIAL CHESS CONGRESS.>

THE MAJOR TOURNEY.>

At board 1, Mr Crane was paired with Mr Higgs, and the opening was the Centre Counter Gambit. Mr Higgs played the earlier moves very well, and if anything secured a slight advantage in position. But being in too great a hurry to press his advantage, he went in for an unsound combination, the result of which was that Mr Crane was left with two bishops splendidly posted against a rook. The victory of the Sydney champion was then a mere question of time and careful play, and the end came very soon, Mr Higgs resigning at his twenty-seventh move.>

Time - Mr Crane, 1 hour 40 minutes ; Mr Higgs, 1 hour 20 minutes.>

- The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.) issue Thursday 18 October 1888>

The scores stand thus : —

Crane, 3 wins, 1 adjourned game;
Charlick, 2 wins, 1 draw, 1 adjourned ;
Tullidge, 3 wins, 1 lost;
Stanley, 2 wins, 1 lost, 1 drawn;
Lampe and Brocklebank, each 2 lost, 2 won ;
Higgs and Hay, 4 lost each.>
