Jul-21-13 | | optimal play: <<<<<<THE CENTENNIAL CHESS CONGRESS.> THE MAJOR TOURNEY.>
The proceedings on the fifth day of the Major Tourney resembled those on the fourth, in that the games played at the several boards occupied comparatively short periods of time, and extended only to moderate numbers of moves. At Board II, Mr. Higgs was paired with Mr. Charlick, who did not depart from his somewhat monotonous custom of playing the Petroff defence against all sorts and conditions of antagonists. Mr. Higgs responded by 3. Kt to Q B 3, to which Mr. Charlick rejoined with 3... B to Kt 5. Thereafter the game was carefully developed on both sides, Mr. Higgs playing well for a considerable time, and managing to hold his own very fairly against his formidable antagonist. His later moves, however, did not come up to the promise of the earlier ones, and in the end Mr. Charlick won with a very pretty combination extending over ten or a dozen moves which followed each other with the regularity of clock-work.> Time – Mr. Higgs, 1 hour 19 minutes ; Mr. Charlick, 1 hour 26 minutes.> - The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.) issue Friday 19 October 1888> |
