Jul-22-11  DrMAL: I guess Anish was feeling itchy with his last game and now in this unremarkable opening about his light square bishop so with 9...b5 (instead of 9...b6) he took some risk.

22...Bc5 also tried to get somewhere (instead of, say, doubling rooks on the d-file) but was maybe not best, no matter.

25...Rd8 looked highly dubious. Pono was dispelling any doubt but Anish helped with 26...Rxd1+ this must be losing.

9...b5 is main theoretic continuation (together with 9...a6) here. I never saw 9...b6 played in this position. It looks bit too passive and it would negate the sense of exchange of Pawn on c4, which gives away control of centre for possibility to expand and develop quickly the Queenside. 11...b4 seems to be a new move here though in similar positions arising from Semi-Slav complex it is quite common. Black apparently lost the thread of game around move 20 and fell into troubles. I agree that 25...Rd8 was a mistake but the position was already difficult. 25...Rb8 makes sense here as else white would play Bb5 like in the game. But it is evident that white is better anyway.

Jul-22-11  Atking: Isn't 17...Qa8 more natural? My impression too is Giri may be exhausted by his previous game vs Nakamura.
Jul-22-11  DrMAL: <HC> Yes you're right those are the main lines, thanx. It was just an idea on how he could have further played for a draw, tongue in cheek LOL. Glad you picked up on it, cheers.
Jul-23-11  DiscoJew: Ruslan makes it look so easy, like a walk in the park. I really liked the quiet move 18.h3! This was my favorite move of the game.
Jul-24-11  zealouspawn: black resigns due to the threat of 35. Ra8, where Kc7 is met by Na6+, winning the exchange. If 34.. Nb6, then 35. Rb5 wins.
Apr-22-12  MarkFinan: <DiscoJew> I just played through this game, and 18.h3 was the only move I considered, stopping the Knight coming to g4 and forcing the weakening g3, so I'd not give it an exclam. :)
