Jul-24-11  hedgeh0g: A crazy Grünfeld with immense complications beginning with 17...Nd5!?

Without extensive analysis, I think it would be quite difficult to accurately evaluate the position after this move, but it's quite clear that Black got a dangerous-looking attack for the piece. Fine defending by Ivanchuk, although it looks like he may have won it on time; the final position doesn't look resignable for Black.

Jul-25-11  sshhhh: Not sure it has to be a loss on time. You're a piece down against Ivanchuk, you had a strong attack, but (to my inexpert eye) it looks like it's dissipated. That'd make me want to give up. Presumably the point of Rg1 is to prevent black exchanging his d8 rook for d4 bishop and f6 knight: 33...Rxd4, 34 Qe8+ Kxf6, 35 Rg6#. How else does black attack to get compensation for the piece?
Jul-25-11  Gilmoy: <sshhhh: 33..Rxd4 34.Qe8+> Black has e8 defended twice: Qxe8 and Rd2 is hanging.

More simply: After <33.Rg1> all of White's pieces are strong and fully active, while Black's pieces haven't improved. Bf8 is weak, Bg7 is not really playable now, and White's attack is rolling: Nh7, or Rg8-Rxf8-Qxh6, or Qe5. White's K is safer, and White's two files are better than Black's.

Jul-25-11  notyetagm: On board 1 Sutovsky went headhunting against Ivanchuk, but his spectacular idea with 17...Nd5(?) 18.exd5 Bf5+ 19.Ka1 Bc2(?) was tactically flawed.
Jul-25-11  notyetagm: Brilliant tactical idea by Sutovsky:

17...Nd5(?) 18.exd5 Bf5+ 19.Ka1 Bc2(?)

Too bad it didn't work out for him.

Jul-25-11  sshhhh: <Gilmoy> Ouch, yes. Queens move backwards. Serves me right for posting half-asleep
Jul-25-11  Xeroxx: Typical Ivanchuk game.
Jul-25-11  notyetagm: Game Collection: SUTOVSKY: TACTICAL GENIUS

Ivanchuk vs Sutovsky, 2011 17...Nd5(?) 18.exd5 Bf5+ 19.Ka1 Bc2(?) does not quite work

Jul-25-11  JonathanJ: you just shouldn't play any doubtful sacrifices against chucky.
Jul-26-11  notyetagm: <JonathanJ: you just shouldn't play any doubtful sacrifices against chucky.>

But it was *awful* pretty. Sutovsky probably just could not resist it.

:-)

Nov-07-12  Travis Bickle: This is the kind of game by Masters that makes me feel like I'm watching Mr Spock play a Romulan in the galaxy. I am lost. What is the point of ..17 Nd5?
Sep-02-14  SpiritedReposte: <Travis Buckle> It was just to open lines and gain time.

It almost looks as if Black has compensation before ...Bc2.

Lots of tactical motives, two good bishops aiming at the White king, Queen/rook battery on the b-file, a fine center knight and all this with White relatively undeveloped.

I'd play 19. ...Rfc8 I think to get my last piece in the action.

Can anyone Fritztigate this? Or maybe Houdinify.
