Retireborn: Analyzed by Soltis in his book on US championships. He writes that the immediate 21...f4 is unsound because of 22.gxf4 exf4 23.Bd4 f3+ 24.Kh1 Qg3 25.Bxg7+ Qxg7 (given a ? by Soltis but I assume it's a misprint) 26.Rg1, but then Houdini gives 26...Qf6 27.Raf1 Qh4 and Black is doing OK.

Houdini identifies 27.b3 as White's mistake and suggests 27.Nd5 is the only good move.

The finish with the knighting check is very pretty, but Houdini points out that the insouciant 40...Re8 would also win.

I have not been able to discover a round number for this game - would be grateful for that information if anybody has it.

Jun-01-17  Howard: No problem--if you just kindly look below, you will see that it took place in Round 7 of that particular championship.

You've helped me numerous times, Retireborn ! Glad to return the favor.

Retireborn: LOL - trust me to fail to look in an obvious place!

Thanks though, Howard.
