fredthebear: This game features two typical mating Spearheads. White has a Q&R Spearhead on the open h-file, but could use a third unit for assistance. Black avoided exchanging off the dark-squared bishops, and won with his Spearhead on the long diagonal after exchanging minor pieces and then sacrificing his last rook. Earlier in the game, Black conducted an exchange sacrifice. A pleasing game for Black!

Honza Cervenka: 24...Rxc2 was also possible.
Sep-15-22  goodevans: With it's simultaneous attacks on opposite sides of the board, this is about as typical a Sicilian Dragon as you can find. Other than that, is there any particular connection to the much publicised GOT prequel that singles this game out? As someone who hasn't done either series, I'm genuinely curious.

Nice win by Black. 21.Bxf6 looked like the start of a promising attack but in the end it just unleashed the Dragon Bishop.

Sep-15-22  goodevans: These Dragon positions are always so pregnant with possibilities. If 21.Bxf6 was a mistake then what would I have played?

I'd have probably opted for 21.Qe1 with the idea of bringing the B back via c1 to b2 to sure up the weakness on c3. From e1 the Q can then attack via h4.

But should I be worried about 21...Nxe4 22.Qxe4 Bf5? After 23.Qxd7 Bxc2+ 24.Kxc2 Qxa2+ 25.Kd3 Rxc3+ I don't think I can survive the King hunt. On the other hand, if I decline the second sac with 24.Kc1 it looks like Black will run out of checks pretty quickly and then he'll be at my mercy.

Just thought today's pun deserved a 'fantasy' variation.

FSR: Sam Shankland has observed that Black never gets mated with his dragon bishop still on the board.
