Domdaniel: Despite my success here, I haven't played 3...a6 (after 3.Nc3) since. Perhaps it's due another outing.

4.e5 is slightly inaccurate: better is 4.Nf3.

  Domdaniel: I beat Rory Quinn again a month later, also in a French. He deviated first (1.e4 e6 2.Nf3) but fell for a semi-trap (2...d5 3.Nc3 c5 4.d4 Nf6 5.e5 ... and now, not the routine 5...Nd7, but 5...Ne4).

I've seen one other game in which this position was reached - via Alekhine's Defence.

Domdaniel: In 2017 I deployed 3...a6 against the same opponent, and lost. This time he came prepared and went into an Exchange line after 3.Nc3 a6 4.exd5 exd5, where ...a6 isn't so useful to black.
