offramp: Black's thoughts are entirely on his own attack until he gets a wake up call with 37.a6:

He presses the snooze button with 37...f4, then starts the well-known ticking mechanism of ...Nf1 g3+.

Jul-04-12  Eyal: According to Matlakov's comments after the game (translated in http://whychess.com/en/node/2160) he underestimated 33...Nd2. 33.Rxa7 turns out to be a waste of time – after <33.Rf7!> instead, Black doesn't have time for 33...Nd2 34.Bf8! Nf1+ 35.Kg1 Ne3 (or Ng3) since 36.Bxg7+ mates. With the rook on a7, 34.Bf8 doesn't work because of 34...Nf3+! 35.gxf3 Qd2+ and the king can't escape perpetual check by 36.Kg3 Qg5+ 37.Kf2 Qd2+ 38.Qe2 because 38...Qxd4+ wins the rook after 39.Kf1/g2. There were still some winning chances left before Black forced a draw on move 38, but it was already considerably more tricky, and Matlakov also missed 37...f4 when he played 37.a6 (instead of 37.Qe3).
