Korora: Insane difficulty--but I actually guessed the ♘ sac part of things, Was dead wrong about the follow-up, though.
Sep-22-24  mel gibson: I saw the first ply straight away.

Stockfish 17 declines the Knight and says:

14. Nhxg5+

(14. Nhxg5+ (1.Nhxg5+ Kg8 2.Nf3 Kh7 3.Nc3 Nd4 4.Nh4 a4 5.e3 Nb3 6.Qc2 Bd7 7.Bxb7 Rb8 8.Bf3 Qc8 9.Kf1 Nxd2+ 10.Qxd2 f5 11.Nd5 Bf6 12.Nxe7 Bxe7 13.Ng6 Re8 14.Bd5 Bc6 ) +1.66/46 536)

score for White +1.66 depth 46.

if I force SF to accept the Knight:

14. Nhxg5+ hxg5

15. h6 (15. h6 (1.h6 Bh8 2.Nxg5+ Kg6 3.Bf3 a4 4.b3 axb3 5.Rxb3 Nd4 6.Bh5+ Kf6 7.Rb1 Ng6 8.Nh7+ Ke6 9.Nxf8+ Qxf8 10.Bc3 Nc6 11.f4 Kd7 12.f5 Nge7 13.e4 Kc7 14.Bd1 b6 ) +2.29/45 608)

score for White +2.29 depth 45.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Saw the first four moves and claimed credit; it looked like a speculative sacrifice with very good chances of success. Flubbed only 2 this week; at this age will take any good news of any sort.

  scormus: I figured 14 Nhxg5+ and probably B would be better to decline. After ... hxg5?! I wasn't sure whether 15 h6 or Bxg5. SF picked h6 (+1.9 to W) but when I forced Bxg5 it rated slightly better (+2.0 to W). 15 Nexf5+ is weaker (+1.3 to W).

Not surprisingly, 14 Nexg5+ hxg5 (+1.1 to W) and 14 Bxg5 f6 (+0.5 to W) are both weaker than 14 Nhxg5+ Kh8! (+1.5 to W)

Interesting that W's position looks very advantageous and the text seems to confirm that, but according to SF there is only a moderate advantage against the best defence. Good call from <An Englishman>

Sep-22-24  stacase: Knights on the rim are dim and a Knight in the middle is a force to be reckoned with. So the Knight on the rim got the nod for suicide. Some of the next moves were no brainers. 21.Bxa5 side lining Blacks Queen was genius.

LIFE Master AJ: I looked at this one for at least 30 minutes. I really did not solve it.

My first instinct was to take on g5 ... to unleash the power of the White Rook on h1. (Pawn @ h5-h6!) However, the correct followup completely eluded me, I did not even consider b2-b4.

Not very masterly of me!

Good problem!!! I am all thumbs today ... but they are all pointed straight up! :) [ROFL]

LIFE Master AJ: I solved a few problems this week. (I was in my car a lot.) Everyone covered all bases, I was very busy and I felt that I had nothing significant to add.

Even though this one stumped me... I enjoyed it tremendously. I have heard of Meizis, but not really familiar with either player.

Have a good/safe week everyone. (I took my daughter to work this morning. I saw quite the wreck at the corner of "W" street and Airport Blvd on the way home ... it really shook me up.)

Sep-23-24  Rosbach: I couldn't find more than a few moves. 21.Bxa5 was really a cool move - sacrificing a Bishop into a check to get the Queen free passage to Qh6+
