Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-05-12  paavoh: What a dismantling of Black's position. Vintage Chucky.
Sep-05-12  latvalatvian: 35...b3 deserves the brillancy prize
Sep-05-12  Robed.Bishop: <latvalatvian> I don't understand your comment.
Sep-05-12  Jacob Arnold: <Robed.Bishop>, in some tournaments, "brilliantly" played games are awarded "brilliancy prizes" for the tournament. Usually one per tournament. Essentally, <latvalatvian> is saying that b3 was a great move
Sep-06-12  Robed.Bishop: <Jacob Arnold> My bad. Recognizing that I've been a member here for a few years might have been a clue that I have at least a modicum of chess knowledge, though being relatively new here this might not have occured to you. My apologies for being vague.

I know what a brilliancy prize is. I don't understand why 35...b3 deserves a brilliancy prize, although it did hasten the game to its end.

Sep-06-12  rilkefan: A cursory check with stockfish suggests 21...Bf7 as equal. Maybe this is kinda obvious, as Rac8 very quickly fails to work out.

I'm guessing the comment about ...b3 above meant, "Why is a GM bothering to play on in such a hopeless position and choosing a move that clearly will be stymied?" If so a possible answer is both players being low on time.

Sep-06-12  Robed.Bishop: <rilkefan> The time issue is a plausible explanation, and I agree the position before 35...b3 was hopeless.

I was guessing the answer to my question was that the remark was made in jest or tongue in cheek. It's also possible that Jacob's knowledge of chess is, shall we say, limited. Before jumping to a conclusion, however, I thought it prudent to ask the speaker, get more information. Maybe I missed something. As it is, I guess we'll have to sit and wonder.
