  wwall: In Walter Browne's book 'The Stress of Chess... and its Infinite Finesse,' Browne writes that Bobby Fischer adjudicated this game as a draw after much thought. Browne says, "I now know beyond the shadow of a doubt that he came to the wrong conclusion..." Browne is convinced that Black wins, but Fischer said it was a draw. And Fischer was right! Browne analyzes the ending as follows: 52.Kf1 h5 53.h3 Ke4 54.Re8 Rxa7 55.Rxe6+ Kf5 56.Re8 Ra1+ 56.Re8 Ra1+ 57.Ke2 Ra2+ 58.Kf1 Kg5 59.Rf8 Ra1+ 60.Ke2 Rg1 61.Rg8+ Kh4 62.Kf3 Rf1+ 63.Ke2 Rf2+ 64.Ke1 f3 65.gxf3 Kxh3 66.Re8 Rxf3 67.Ke2 Rg3 68.Kf1 h4 69.Re4 Rf3+ 70.Ke2 Rf6 71.Rxe3+ Kg2

72.Re8 Rf2+ 73.Ke1 Rf3 and Browne says that Black is winning winning easily. By the way, Browne marks the game 1-0 in his book, instead of 0-1 or even 1/2-1/2

But instead of 72.Re8?, White plays 72.Re4! and it is a draw. If 72...Rf2+ 73.Ke1 draws. If 72...h3, then 73.Rg4+ draws. If 72...Kg3, then 73.Re3+ draws.

louispaulsen88888888: I found this independently awhile ago and now have confirmed it absolutely with tablebases. The above analysis is 100% correct. The tablebase gives Blacks best try as 72...Kh2 73. Ke1=
Jun-14-17  GiuocoPianoMan: Most rook endgames are a draw.
