Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-31-16  optimal play: Wallace-Esling 1895 Australian Championship

Game 9, Monday 24th June

<In the ninth game Mr. Esling opened with the Centre Gambit, to which Mr. Wallace replied in the best style, and succeeded on his 12th move in winning the opening player's Q R P.

In return for this Mr. Esling had advanced his K R P, and by changing it off got a strong opening file for his K R bearing down on Black's king's quarters.

Black managed to neutralise this by forcing the exchange of queens.

A few moves afterwards White won the K R P by a manoeuvre the depth of which Mr. Wallace had apparently not gauged, and after a few exchanges the latter proposed a draw, which was agreed to.

Play will be resumed at 2 p.m. to-day.

Score: Mr. Wallace, 4 games; Mr. Esling, 2 games; drawn, 3 (not counting).

After this, drawn games will count as ½ to each player.>

A Wallace vs W Crane, 1893

14...Bf5 is sensible enough, but maybe instead 14...Qa1+ 15.Kd2 Rd8+ 16.Bd3 Qa5+ 17.Kc1 Bg4 18.f3? Re8!
