Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-13-13  optimal play: <<<<<<THE CENTENNIAL CHESS CONGRESS.>

THE MAJOR TOURNEY.>

In the Major Tourney of the Centennial Chess Congress play was continued during yesterday at the City Bank Hall.

At board 1 Mr. Tullidge was paired with Mr. Higgs. The game was the form of the French defence in which the first player forces off the adverse king's bishop at an early stage. At about the 20th move Mr Tullidge made a strong attack by advancing his King's Knight's pawn, whereby he was enabled to compel the exchange of the black queen for a rook and a knight, and in the course of a very short time to announce mate.>

Time - Mr Tullidge, 1 hour 17 minutes ; Mr Higgs, 1 hour 10 minutes.>

This left the scores of the competitors at the close of the day's play :-

Mr Charlick, 2 ; Mr Crane, 2 ; Mr Brocklebank, 1 ; Mr Lampe, 1 ; Mr Stanley, 1 ; Mr Tullidge, 1 ; Mr Hay, 0 ; and Mr Higgs, 0.>
