Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-28-13  Edeltalent: 22...f6 leaves me puzzled. Does Black love his dark-squared Bishop so much that he tries to keep him at all costs - or does he hate him and wants to condemn him to a long life full of misery?
Sep-28-13  Shams: <Edeltalent> I agree that it's an ugly move, though acquiescing to the trade of DSBs looks unpleasant too.

This game is a good illustration of how 10.Rb1 can cause such problems; if Black pokes around White gets in b3/Bb2 defanging the long diagonal and likely a4/Nb5 too, after which he is just better and Black is left to scramble for a counterpunch that may not even be there.

This is why Black's best treatment seems to be 10...Qa5 and 11...Nb6, delaying castling in order to interrupt White's ideal queenside development as quickly as possible. It's still not very convincing though. See N Brunner vs M Vachier-Lagrave, 2007 for a game where this works out for Black.
