Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-16-13  iking: Wang Hao is optimistic with his game, and won in the end, just like the other day with Caruana ... nice win Hao.
Oct-16-13  csmath: Much better played than yesterday, fine positional win.
Oct-16-13  The Last Straw: 51...e4? Makes Ponomariov look like he wants to lose.
Oct-16-13  csmath: Ponomariov makes serious error with:

23. ...Bf6?

[allowing white to separate his kingside pawns making it into difficult ending.

23. ...Rb8
24. Nd3 Qxc3
25. Bxc3 Rxd1+
26. Bxb1 Ke6

with completely equal ending.]

Oct-16-13  csmath: Wang is a very good ending player. He has beaten Carlsen in ending. Going into difficult ending with him is not a good idea.
Oct-16-13  The Last Straw: 51...♔e6 is drawn.
Oct-16-13  csmath: Wang is a very good ending player. He has beaten Carlsen in ending. Going into difficult ending with him is not a good idea.

In this game he did not play anything wild, he played very sane and solid positional game and outplayed Ponomariov in ending. Ponomariov got himself in inferior ending.

<51...e6 is drawn.>

Not really, that is lost as well.

Oct-16-13  csmath: 51. ...Ke6
52. Rb3 Rxb3
53. Bxb3 Kd6
54. Kg4

is lost. Hard to see what else can black do.

I think this ending after 25. ...Nd4 move of black is extremely difficult to play because of too many weak pawns.

Oct-16-13  The Last Straw: <csmath> I think your position is still a draw with opposite bishops.
Oct-16-13  csmath: Nope, it is hopelessly lost.

You should never assume that opposite color bishops would lead to a draw. The basic problem is here that white has two passers far apart and thus black cannot keep them with bishop only while his king has to stay in center regardless.

I think Pono got himself in deep trouble after 23. Bf6? and after that he did not find any way out. That ending is simply not a smart idea to play against Wang Hao.

Oct-16-13  csmath: 51. ...e4

is not an error, that is just a desperation move. It does not help but there is hardly anything better. I don't see it.

I think I myself would lose that ending after 26 moves as black no matter what. Perhaps there is some escape but I do not see it.

Oct-17-13  csmath: In postmortem analysis Wang, Pono, and Rogozenko agreed that

30. ...Bd5!

would have saved the game.

I see that

31. Rc7?! Kf8
32. Rxa7 Rd4 [with intention Rd2]

does not work. But white does not have to wait for that. The alternative

31. Kf2 h5
32. Rc7+ Be7
33. Rxa7 Kf6
34. Bh7 Rc3
35. a4 c4
36. Ke2 Rb3
37. Ra5 Rb2+
38. Nc2

forces black still to work to save the draw.

However this is indeed the last moment for the escape if there is one. This is one very serious ending with black in need to play dynamic game to compensate for lost pawn.
