Sep-05-23 | | Brenin: White is a P down. 42 Qa6 forks Q and B, and if Black's Q comes off the bach rank, e.g. 42 ... Qxa6, or 42 ... Qb8 43 Qxd6 Qxd6, then Re8+ leads to mate. |
Sep-05-23 | | Mayankk: Black has a weak back rank as its pinned Knight is blocking the only escape square for its King. White can exploit this by the dummy Queen sac 42 Qa6 inviting 42 ... Qxa6 43 Re8+ Bf8 44 Rxf8#. And if the Black Queen stays on the 8th rank via 42 ... Qb8/Qd8, White can just take at 43 Qxd6 with impunity since 43 ... Qxd6 will still result in a mate after 44 Re8+ Qf8 44 Qxf8#. |

Sep-05-23 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: My option is: 42. Qa6 Qb8 43. Qxd6 Qxd6 44. Re8+ Qf8 45. Rxf8# or Rc8 43. Qxd6 Rd8 44. Qf6 Rg8 45. Re7 Qf8 46. Qxf8 Rxf8 47. Bxg7+ Kg8 48. Bxf8 Kxf8 49. Rxh7 winning. Another way: 42... Rc8 43. Qxd6 Rd8 44. Qf6 Rg8 45. Re7 Qxd5 46. Rxg7 Rxg7 47. Qf8+ Qg8 48. Bxg7#. |

Sep-05-23 | | minasina: You can fight against 42. Qa6, so 42. Qa4 is better. |
Sep-05-23 | | minasina: ...meaning Qd4. |
Sep-05-23 | | stacase: Black's Knight is pinned. White's Rook wants to to say check from e8 but Black's Queen guards the spot. Let's see if White can make her move. And so..... |
Sep-05-23 | | agb2002: White has the bishop pair for a bishop, a knight and a pawn. The black pieces are defenseless and the black queen is tied the defense of the back rank. Therefore, 42.Qa6: A) 42... Qxa6 43.Re8+ Bf8 44.Rxf8#.
B) 42... Qb(d,f)8 43.Qxd6 wins a piece.
C) 42... Rc8 43.Qxd6 wins a piece.
D) 42... Qxd5 43.Re8+ Qg8 44.Bxg7+ Kxg7 45.Rxg8+ Kg8 46.Qxd6 + - [Q+B vs r+2p]. |

Sep-05-23 | | vajeer: Black's position is so bad. Even 42. Qb5 wins (although less powerful) |

 | | scormus: 42 Qa6 should win a piece and sooner or later win the game. But B thoughtfully cooperates with ... Qxa6 to set up nice finish |
Sep-05-23 | | saturn2: 42.Qb5 and then Qd7 has a similar idea of thteateming backrank mate and the win a piece (either the Ng7 or the Bd6). SF confirms |
Sep-05-23 | | jffun1958: The BQ has to defend the 8th rank. Therefore 42. Qa6 is logical.
Best answer, according to Stockfish is
42...Qc8 43.Qxd6 Kg8 44.Qxf4 ... |
Sep-05-23 | | TheaN: After <42.Qa6! +-> it's curtains, for Black already has a worse position, the text shows why the queen can't be taken and Black loses at least a piece. First I looked at 42.Qa3? but that's a bit excessive, triple fork yes, but 42....Bxa3 -+ whoops. <<minasina>: You can fight against 42. Qa6, so 42. Qa4 is better. (...) ...meaning Qd4.> Eh. Not really sure what you mean. Both Qa4 and Qd4 are impossible, Qa3 loses and I guess the only alternative that makes sense is 42.Qe4?, but this is even after 42....Kg8 ⩲, as White just removed a couple of problems for Black himself. |

Sep-05-23 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: My friend <Jim> from the good gim <from Providence>, I suppose that W need not to exchange the ♕: after <42. Qa6 Qf8 43. Qxd6 Kg8>, then 44. Qh6 Nf5 45. Qg5+ Ng7 46. d6 or 44. Qh6 Rc8 45. d6 Rd8 46. Bb3+ Kh8 47. Re7... with the same plane. |
Sep-05-23 | | moodini: I found 42 Bc2 which wins the exchange because black has to deal with the mate threat on h7. It seems to work but no where near as well as the game move. |
Sep-05-23 | | moodini: Actually it doesn't win the exchange, it just exchanges rooks. The computer thinks it's still winning but I'd probably blow it. |
Sep-05-23 | | TheaN: <moodini: Actually it doesn't win the exchange, it just exchanges rooks. The computer thinks it's still winning but I'd probably blow it.> Interesting line though: 42.Bc2!? Rxe1+ 43.Kf2 and Black has to deal with Qxh7#, so 43....Qg8 44.Kxe1 +-:
 click for larger view
It's winning but Black has an out with 44....Qe8+ 45.Kf2 Qg6, kind of forcing the trade 46.Qxg6 hxg6 47.Bxg6 +-. This however, should be a relatively simple endgame for White. |
