tamar: Stockfish announced Mate in 65 (plys) after 59 Re3+

Its otherworldly horizon is scary.

May-11-14  nolanryan: she plays with three balls
Jul-21-14  mrandersson: Its scary stuff i know and to think its only going to get better.
Jul-21-14  RubinSteinitz: Is this version of stockfish akin to stockfish 5? or is it some freakish souped up hot rod?

AylerKupp: <RubinSteinitz> A little bit of both. There is at least one enhanced version of Stockfish under continuous development based on Stockfish 5 and differing mainly in its ability to use Syzygy tablebases (not relevant for this competition per the rules which prohibit tablebase support) but incorporating many other enhancements as well. You can find this enhanced version here: http://abrok.eu/stockfish/.

However, I don't know if the Stockfish version used in this tournament is one of the ones from this development fork or another development fork.

HeMateMe: how can anyone think chess is played out after looking at this game?
Jan-10-17  Howard: Good point !
Jan-10-17  todicav23: I used to think that the top engines are not far from playing perfect chess. But then I discovered the endgame King+Queen+Knight vs King-Rock-Bishop-Night:

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/fu...

This is 545 moves of maneuvering which is just crazy. The current top chess engines are patzers compared with some kind of "god-like entity" capable of understanding and playing such an endgame.

Of course there are even more complex endgames. Chess is way deeper than most of the people think. Maybe the perfect chess game requires millions of moves to be played.

Jan-10-17  todicav23: Actually it is also possible that with perfect play, white could force a quick win, let's say under 100 moves, without being required to play a complex and long endgame.
Jan-10-17  izimbra: <how can anyone think chess is played out after looking at this game?>

Chess can't be played out, per se. But...in this game we have an example of 1 "player" being notably stronger than the other "player" and steadily marching to victory. When both players are about equally strong *and* relatively mistake free, then we expect a draw most of the time. When both players are equally strong, but they take risks and make mistakes, then we get more White wins and black wins. There's been a trend over time in SuperGM play towards fewer mistakes and more of the game remaining in large "opening book theory"...this leads to more draws. If those SuperGMs were playing Stockfish, the engine would have mostly victories, and some would be spectacular.

The concern is not that the engines have all become perfect...a next gen engine will probably crush current Stockfish...the point is that accuracy plus balance plus big opening theory leads to a lot more unspectacular draws.

HeMateMe: there were plenty of decisive games at the most recent super GM tournament, in London. Perhaps the recent WC match was a bit too quiet for some folks because both Carlsen and Karjakin have a conservative style?
Jan-10-17  izimbra: Tournaments can be - and in some sense, usually are - set up to give more incentive to try for wins. In order to take home first prize in a big field, a player usually has to win a bunch. This promotes more risk taking.

Also, the selection of participants in London was above average in terms of picking players who find new attacks. It wasn't a tournament of defensive specialists.

Feb-13-17  whiteshark: You are fired!
