<<<<<<CHESS NOTES.>

On the Queen's birthday, May 24, several matches by telegraph were played in the other colonies. The eighteenth match between Victoria and New South Wales was played, there being 10 players aside.>

The captain of the Victorian team was Mr. F. K. Esling, and the captain of the New South Wales team was Mr. A. E. N. Wallace.>

Much interest was centred in board No.1, where Mr. Wallace, the retired Australian champion, who has lately re-entered match play, met Mr. Esling, the premier of Victorian chess, the latter having the move.>

The game opened with the Petroff, which was played on regulation lines, the local player having, if anything, the advantage until the 20th move. He then spoilt his chances, as the exchange of the Bishop for the Black Knight at the 22nd would have kept him safe. As it was he left his opponent with an opportunity for pushing on a cramping attack, which culminated in Mr. Esling telegraphing his resignation when 29 moves had been played.>
