Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-14-14  Karpova: 35...f4?? turns a position with good winning chances into an inferior one. Alapin had seen the correct <35...g4>, but he touched the ♙f5 by accident and had to move it (he annotated the game).

Alapin writes that Fahrni was very lucky (<beispielloses, elementares Glück>, i. e. unprecedented, elementary luck) in that tournament. He gives one further example: In round 2, Spielmann had White against Fahrni:

Spielmann played 27.Ne7+ (27.Nf3 looks strong) and resigned after 27...Rxe7.

In a tournament with 12 rounds, Fahrni got a 2 points lead, which Alapin compares to the Capablanca-Marshall match.

But Alapin saves the game. It seems that 44.e6 was premature, when 44.Qd3+ looks good (44...Kc6 45.Nxd7 Qxd7 46.Qc4+).

Jul-14-14  JimNorCal: Fun tactics towards the end of the game.

Hard to decide if Fahrni or Alapin was more relieved to achieve a draw.

Apr-13-17  zanzibar: It's given as R10 in WSZ v12 (1909) p416 G1390.
