fredthebear: It's more than just looking for checks and captures. Ask yourself "Where is the mating square?" Find that guillotine! The mating square is usually next to the king or on an open line to the king. Then find a way to get her there in two or three zig-zag moves, and/or perhaps remove the defender of the mating square.
Mar-13-23  areknames: Well, the game is clearly lost even before 27...g6 and after that checkmate can't be stopped so what should Black have done other than resign or allow his opponent to mate him?

fredthebear: 23...Rxf5 would've been an improvement as it maintains a pawn obstruction on e6. After that point, things just keep getting worse for Black in part due to White's mobile pawn center.

Writer GM Andrew Soltis is big on asking "How will this move affect the center (control)?"
