Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-09-14  Karpova: Companion game of New York vs Philadelphia, 1859 with the same playing committees, except for N Marache playing instead of D W Fiske (New York).

<This game was played on the evenings of December 18, 21, 22 and 28. It was on the last recess, between the 22d and 28th, that Mr. H. P. Montgomery's remarkable analytical ability was brought to bear upon the position. His analysis occupied about ten closely written pages, demonstrating to his admiring colleagues that the win was indeed forced.>

9.Nbd2 was a novelty.

The annotator considers <29...Bf5> to be better than 29...Kh7. The text move looks fine, though (29...Bf5 30.Qc4+ Kh7 31.Bd6 and White's position looks better than in the game).

30.Re1: <From now to the end the Athenaeum players conduct the game with full mastership. Mr. H. P. Montgomery, especially, had analyzed the position in every detail, between the third and final sittings.>

32...Qd5 looks like a mistake. The annotator said that Black wanted to prevent <Qg5> by counter attacking. Black could perhaps have won after 32...Be4.

Dec-11-14  paderamo: http://www.newspapers.com/clip/1294...

This game appeared in the Cleveland Daily Leader, 8 January 1859; so if the game was played in December, I believe the date should be 1858. Reichhelm & Shipley are mistaken.
