  FSR: Nice Piano.
Aug-03-15  thegoodanarchist: <FSR: Nice Piano.>

Would you say it is a Giuoco 'peanu? :)

Aug-04-15  thegoodanarchist: or the pun could be 'peanu player
Aug-04-15  john barleycorn: I suggest "Nil nisi peanuts"

FSR: <thegoodanarchist> I'm adopting the suggestion you made on my forum, and changing my nomination from "Nice Piano" to "Nice - A Piano."
May-10-22  Brenin: 28 ... Be7 was unfortunate. Instead, 28 ... Nxf6 was necessary, e.g. 29 exf6 Rg8, or 29 Bxf8 Ne4, and Black survives. Going back, 14 ... d5 was premature: a developing move such as Re8, Bd7 or Be6 would have been better.

Teyss: It's amazing how many Giuoco Pianos are actually <not> quiet games. For memo (had to look for that) "Giuoco Piano" covers C50 to C54 but only C53 and 54 are named as such.

The ending is 30...Nxf6 (or Qxf6) 31.exf6 Rg8 (forced) 32.fxe7

ajk68: Computer thinks 12...c6? was where black went wrong. c5 was needed.
May-10-22  goodevans: <Brenin: [...] 28 ... Nxf6 was necessary, e.g. 29 exf6 Rg8, or 29 Bxf8 Ne4, and Black survives.>

The fact that Black could have survived this onslaught begs the question why the "Hairy Peanut" (I do believe that's now his nickname) felt the need to play <25.b4> before Nf6 and Be3. Omit this move and <25.Nf6 Bd8 26.Be3> forces the Q to e7 where frankly she's just in the way (26...Qc4?? 27.Bd4 would trap the Q). After <26...Qe7 27.Bh6> Black would not have had that chance of survival.

Love the pun.

May-10-22  MatrixManNe0: Without 25. b4, there is no 28. Bc5, no? Even if the black queen ends up on e7, white is without that extra tempo for the attack
May-10-22  Brenin: <goodevans>: Yes, I wondered about the usefulness of 25 b4, when 25 Bf6+ Nxf6 (Ng7 or Kg8 26 Qg5 with mate) 26 Nxf6 seems more direct.
May-10-22  goodevans: <MatrixManNe0: Without 25. b4, there is no 28. Bc5, no?>

Getting the B to c5 was only important because Black erred with <28...Be7?>. As <Brenin> pointed out earlier, Black should have played <28...Nxf6 29.Bxf8 Ne4>. In this instance <28.Bh6 Nxf6 29.Bxf8 Ne4> would have achieved exactly the same position.

My point was that Bh6 is much more effective if you force the Black Q fo e7 rather than c7. As I said, on e7 she gets in the way and that becomes clear if you look at Brenin's other line, viz. <28...Nxf6 29.exf6 Rg8>. With the Q on e7 she becomes en prise after <exf6> forcing <...Qxf6> when <Bxf8> is a clear win.

<Brenin> Yes, 25.Bf6+ looks just as damning as 25.Nf6 and possibly a little simpler.

May-11-22  thegoodanarchist: Proof positive that a pun submission can be used as GOTD years after it is submitted!

In this case, 7 years. Thanks, cg.com! I am humbled that this meager effort was awarded with recognition.

You're too kind!
