offramp: <Beholder> pointed out an interesting sequence. After 38...Ra8,

...white can in fact win with an immediate 39.Re7! But So, who may have had little time, was obviously concerned about the subsequent 38...Ra1+ 39.Kf2▢ Ra2+...

Here white's king would have to venture forward: 40.Ke3. No one likes to do that!

But in fact 39.Re7 is (<Beholder> says) a mate in 13. The black checks run out.

So So played the clever 39.Nd7:

Mate is threatened by Qg7, so black really has to take by 39...Qxd7, but now 40.Re7 looks like a killer:

Threatening mate at g7 AND the queen.

Incredibly, black can now draw. 40...Qa7+!!

A fantastic resource! It really is sad that black didn't spot this.

Thanks, <Beholder>.

Hum... Maybe too incredible? 41. Kh2 Qg8+ 42. Kh3 ...

And now what? I cannot spot a single check more for Black, and White's Damocles Sword is about to fall...

Otherwise, after 41. Kh2 Black has no more squares to check from, other than c7, which changes nothing.

Am I missing sth?

Sally Simpson: The drawing line is quite a resource.

I don't blame either of the players for missing it though Black will be quietly furious with himself and if it's been shown to him already it may affect his next game.

After 40...Qa7+ 41.Kh2 Qa1.

It seems impossible that this move holds out.

Stops the mate on g7. 42.Rg7+ goes nowhere. Best appears to win the Queen with 42.Re8+ RxR 43.Qxa1.

White is going need Black to make an awful blunder to win that one. If indeed Wes So would have played on.

Am I missing sth?> .. how about 42. Qf8? black can hold

~

Sep-12-15  Rookiepawn: <iking how about 42... Qf8>

Nope, because of 43. Rg7+ followed by 44. Rf7+d.

Now I missed 41... Qa1, and I also arrived at <Sally Simpson>'s line as the best W can do. White should try to manoeuver with the Q in order to make the pawn in h7 fall, but that does not seem forced.

Ouch.

Sep-18-15  cimatar: 40..Qa7 41.RxQ RxR...42.Qe5 zugzwang 42..Rf7 43.Qe8+ Rf8 44.Qe7 Rf7 45.Qe5 zugzwang pawn on c6 falls IMO
Sep-18-15  epistle: 45...g5. then ...g4. Once the f3 pawn is gone, the B just goes e4-d5-e4-d5
Sep-19-15  cimatar: @ epistle

45...g5 loses the pawn, with 46. Qe8+ Rf8 47.Qe7 Rf7 48 Qxg5+ Kf8 (49.Qd8+mate or Kh8 (49.Qd8 Rf8 50.QxR+ Bg8 51.Qg7 mate)

Sep-19-15  cimatar: with this I think Qa7 is not a drawing resource..this game is a won game for white using zugzwang!

click for larger view

if 45..bc4 Qe8 then takes c6 pawn with g7 and white bishop target in the offing

Sep-19-15  Fiona Macleod: ok, how about 45...Kf8?
Sep-19-15  cimatar: 45..Kf8 I must agree is the best move here for black to draw! But this is still a long game! However 46.Qd6+ or Kg3 is an option for White to press on for the win!
