Oct-14-15  Eduardo Leon: I don't understand 6.c4 at all. Isn't this opening supposed to be played similarly to a Ruy Lopez? (With moves like c3, ♗c2, d4, etc.)

After 13...♘c6, the only one controlling d4 is black, whereas white herself can't do much with the d5 square.

Oct-14-15  Nerwal: There is not much to understand in White's opening (except she played all this very quickly, which is very strange). Anybody with a bit of experience in this structure knows it's bad. It's like an English opening gone horribly wrong where Black has the d4 square and all the pawn breaks (b5, f5...) while the ♘d5 does nothing (Watson has an example of this in SOMCS). On top of that White is quite behind in development and put the pieces on bad squares (♗f1, ♖e1).

White can play something else than 19. g3 losing by force but the position is already passive and much unpleasant. Mariya already had some problems with her white openings in this tournament but that was probably not the right time to have such a bad day.

Oct-15-15  detritus: The Once And Future Queen.
Oct-15-15  makinavaja: M. Muzychuk played very well in this tournament, but not in this game. So, I think that she has to solve a psychological problem for next match, like three years ago in Gibraltar: she has "simply" to trust in herself. If she does it, we will watch a very interesting match. Come on, Mariya!

HeMateMe: while developing that "trust" I think she also has to make believe her ratings is 150 points higher:

Hou, Yifan g CHN <2671> 0 1994

2 Koneru, Humpy g IND 2578 0 1987

3 Dzagnidze, Nana g GEO 2573 0 1987

4 Muzychuk, Anna g UKR 2549 0 1990

5 Ju, Wenjun g CHN 2542 0 1991

6 Cmilyte, Viktorija g LTU 2534 0 1983

7 Gunina, Valentina g RUS 2529 6 1989

8 Muzychuk, Mariya g UKR < 2528> 0 1992

There's a reason that Hou doesn't have to compete in these Women's world championship tournaments, same reason that Judit Polgar didn't have to compete in them--the truth is already known. That, said, I hope Mariya M. plays well and delivers a close match.

Oct-16-15  AzingaBonzer: If she limits Hou's win to a +2 score or less, I think that will count as a moral victory.
Oct-16-15  dumbgai: <If she limits Hou's win to a +2 score or less>

That would already be the best score that anyone has scored against Hou in a WCh match. Not counting the KO final that Kosteniuk won.

Oct-17-15  AzingaBonzer: <dumbgai> That's true, but slightly disingenuous. After all, Hou's only played two WWC matches as of this writing. It's not like she's beaten a bunch of different people in 10-game matches--and Ushenina is hardly one of the strongest women out there. The win against Humpy was more impressive, IMO, but Mariya had the same score as Humpy did in this tournament. She'll probably lose to Hou in their match, but I don't think it'll be the demolition that Ushenina suffered.
