Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-13-15  TheFocus: From a simultaneous exhibition in Birmingham, England on October 9, 1919.

Capablanca scored +36=2-2.

Honza Cervenka: 25.Ra3 looks odd, as black can take Pc4 with quite overwhelming effect. I guess that the gamescore is wrong here, and that 25.Qc2 followed by 26.Ra3 and 27.Rda1 was probably played.

Honza Cervenka: The finish is quite odd too, and Capa was quite lucky, if this is correct. 31.Ne1 and 32.Rb3 were two slips leading to quite precarious position for white, and 33.Rxb6 should lose the game, if black would have played 34...Qxe1+ 35.Qf1 Qxf1+ 36.Kxf1 Rxb6 etc. In final position the game is far from over.

MissScarlett: I checked Fiala's <Capablanca in the United Kingdom (1911-1920)> (Olomouc, 2006), and the score is correct as given. Three sources are adduced - the <Times Weekly Edition>, 21.11.1919; <Birmingham Post>, 14.10.1919; <Cheltenham Chronicle>, 25.10.1919. Of which only the <Chronicle> is available at the <BNA>, and their score matches, too, but the <Birmingham Post> is likely the original source.

The <TWE> queries Black's failure to play <26...Nxc4>, as does the <Chronicle> with respect to <34...Qxe1+>.

Honza Cervenka: I would say that <Birmingham Post> got the gamescore wrong, and that this gamescore was reprinted by other publications. It is hard to imagine even in a simul game that Capa had played 25.Ra3.
Dec-08-18  TheFocus: Faulty recollection after the game.

MissScarlett: The <Cheltenham Chronicle> gives <16.dxe5> but the same position results after <16...dxe5>, so the mystery of <25.Ra3> is unaffected.

Without access to the <BP> or <TWE>, one can't be sure whether there's a dispute between sources over White's 16th or there's a transcription mistake by Fiala.
