An Englishman: Good Evening: All those exchanges of pieces, and yet Black's attack remains undiminished. White never got his pieces coordinated. Nice demonstration of the power of the initiative. 47.Rg2,Qe4 and 48...Re1. 47.Rg4,Qf3+; 48.Rg2,Qe4 again.

eternaloptimist: <An Englishman> You did a very good job of summarizing the game! Once Nepo really got his attack going, he just kept the initiative. He kept Leko busy defending things & kept improving his position. That’s a very good point about even after all those exchanges of pieces, the attack remained undiminished. *According to Stockfish 9*, Nepo only could’ve played a better move 3 times max depending on whether 36...♕g4 or ...♖c1 was the better move. Of course chess engines aren’t perfect so that’s not set in stone.

<HeMateMe> You made some valid points as well! If Leko would’ve played 31.g3 followed by ♘f3, it would’ve helped prevent the g2 square from being so weak according to Stockfish 9’s annotations. As for the weak back rank, I think Leko should’ve kept his ♖ on f1 instead of playing 31. ♖f4. His position kept getting worse after that move.

I submitted this game to be the GOTD b/c Nepo did such a great job of attacking Leko’s position & putting him on the defensive. That made it easier for him to calculate. This is a great game to study to improve on attacking a position & the initiative.
