fredthebear: 7.Bd2 is book. 8.Qe2? is unique to this database. 8.Bb5+ scores best for White in a very limited sample size. SF says White should play 8.dxc5, but is slightly worse.

10.0-0-0? looks principled on the surface, but Black is forever better after 10...NxBc3+.

After 14.dxc5? White's tripled pawns on the c-file are not good.

These so called "even" captures favored Black structurally.

If White adds a defender to even the count by the alternative move 15.Bg2, Black shifts gears to the queenside with 15...Nc4+. See diagram:

After the possible 15.Bg2 Nc4+, Black is threatening checkmate.

White would have to give up the queen to stop checkmate. Otherwise, the Black queen will enter and mate on the dark squares.

So, 15.QxNe5 White is forced to capture the knight before it gets to the queenside. After 15...BxNf3 forks the two rooks, Black is clearly winning.

The final position shown is mate in one: 29.Kd2 RxRd1#.
