Nov-21-16  Pedro Fernandez: I don't like use my SF7 since the game "loses flavor", but this time I did it (this position is quite complex), and so, SF recommended the "strange" 19.Qe2, hard to see for a human.

scormus: 19 .... Qh4 would tempt me if I were playing B. If Iwas up against a Master, I would be. ertain to lose, but at least I'd be able to tell my friends I was threatening mate at one stage.

Actually is ....Qh4 really so bad? eg. 20 h3 Ne5 21 Ncd6 Nf3+ would be interesting in the average bar game

Nov-21-16  ajile: <Only rapid/exhibition games: Magnus Carlsen beat Sergey Karjakin 14 to 7, with 5 draws.>

So if this is true then really Carlsen doesn't need to take any chances in "regulation."

It's like hockey when one team is superior in the overtime and shootouts. You can simply play for a draw with the expectation of a big advantage in extra time.

Richard Taylor: This young Polynesian bloke just knocked on the door and furtively handed me $20.00. I was expecting a lineman (they call them technicians now) to check my phone lines etc but this was strange. I knew what it was, my street name has the same sound as the one just down the road. I gave the money back and gave him the general directions to the "tinny house"...

Meanwhile the cops are circling and circling in their helicopter as usual.

Beautiful weather here as it is getting warmer as Xmas approaches.

Nov-21-16  Eyal: <Domdaniel: This begins to remind me slightly of Rubinstein's Immortal: Rotlewi vs Rubinstein, 1907>

Great minds think alike: https://twitter.com/nigelshortchess...

Nov-21-16  sudoplatov: Looks like Carlsen bluffed his way out of trouble.
Nov-21-16  devere: Stockfish thought 19...Qg5 was strong for Black (-0.5). Now it thinks White is very slightly better.

Richard Taylor: <Eyal> I was about to post that just before Dom did so there.
Nov-21-16  peristilo: The engine is taking very long give a proper evaluation. It seems it's a complicated position even for the machine.
Nov-21-16  Jack Kerouac: <Richard Taylor> Good, uh, move..
Nov-21-16  goldenbear: b4 is no longer a threat! Whew!
Nov-21-16  john barleycorn: <Absentee: ... And Carlsen's "dry style" has gained him more victories than any other player's non-dry style.>

Yeah, only its effectiveness is invisible now.

Exactly. And, Karjakin thinking he has a "puncher's chance" in the rapid/blitz playoffs. Thus, we have both players trying for 12 draws.

Nov-21-16  peristilo: Best game so far without a doubt.

Black to make 21st move.

Nov-21-16  jrredfield: For black, Bc6xb5 and Magnus has doubled isolated pawns--not the first time he would have an inferior pawn structure in this match.
Nov-21-16  technical draw: 20. a4 is a draw offer.
Nov-21-16  cow: good idea mrmac
Nov-21-16  Muttley101: <Eyal: <Domdaniel: This begins to remind me slightly of Rubinstein's Immortal: Rotlewi vs Rubinstein, 1907>>

I'm sorry, but this isn't really anything like Rotlewi-Rubinstein: the difference is that Rotlewi incautiously played e3-e4-e5, (zwischenzug ... Bb6+ and subsequent tactics), and Carlsen hasn't weakened his position in this way. A better comparison could be the crazy game Aronian - Anand (WaZ 2014? 2015?), though that one exploded in the centre. At any rate, what is going on in this one is quite different.

Nov-21-16  Eyal: Unlike a move earlier, 20...Qg5 is not so good now, with the bishop on c6, because of 21.Na7.
Nov-21-16  Muttley101: <jrredfield: For black, Bc6xb5 and Magnus has doubled isolated pawns--not the first time he would have an inferior pawn structure in this match.>

B:b5 anytime by black would have to have a really good justification for it, otherwise you're just giving up all your play on the king's side light squares, and also the c6 square, plus support by a pawn. In short, it looks pretty awful. So I guess now Karjakin will play it ...
