offramp: This is like one of those big Gothic games played by Adolph Anderssen.

I was surprised that the solution for today was fairly sedate.

Mar-12-24  ArchangelThe: If the white plays 23. Bf3 exf3 24. Rxe6 g2#
Mar-12-24  mel gibson: I chose 18... f4.

Stockfish chooses the same ply as the game:

18. .. e4

(18. .. e4 (1. ... e4 2.Ne2 dxe3 3.Nxe3 Bxa1 4.Bxf8 Rxf8 5.Qc4 Qxc4 6.Nxc4 Bxe2+ 7.Kxe2 Bd4 8.Ne3 f4 9.Bxe4 Nxf2 10.Kxf2 fxe3+ 11.Ke1 Ng3 12.Bd3 Nxh1 13.Bc4+ Kh8 14.dxe3 Bc3+ ) +6.63/44 222)

score for Black +6.63 depth 44.

if I force SF to play my choice it's not as strong but still winning:

18. ..f4

(18. .. f4 19. Qxd3 (1.Qxd3 fxe3 2.dxe3 Ng3+ 3.Ke1 e4 4.Qd2 dxe3 5.Qxe3 Nxh1 6.Bxf8 Rxf8 7.Bxh1 Bxa1 8.Bxe4 c5 9.Ne2 Bxe2 10.Qxe2 Kh8 11.f3 Qh3 12.Kd1 Qxh4 13.Qd2 Qh1+ 14.Kc2 Bd4 ) -4.68/50 225)

score for White -4.68 depth 50.

when i looked at the board my brain immediately said ..e4 . It's just what the position demands, but I did a double take thinking that's too obvious, I must be missing something. I went with it anyway.

I was surprised when it was actually the move as I was prepared for something brilliant! lol
