  al wazir: After 39. c4 dxc4 40. d.5 c3 41. Qc2, black doesn't have to play 41...Kf6. How does white continue after 41...Kf8? If 42. dxe6 f6 43. Neg6+ Kg8 44. e7 Re8, I don't see a way to win.

The idea seems to be to get the ♕ involved in the attack. Why not just play the immediate 39. Qc2, followed by Ng5 ?

al wazir: I see the white ♕ was already on c2 at move 37. That would have been the right time to play Rae1.
Sep-05-21  mel gibson: With 4 different Knight moves that give a check it was too difficult to analyse.

Stockfish 14 agrees with the text:

score for White +4.13 depth 37.

Sep-05-21  Brenin: Since it was a Sunday puzzle, I was obsessed with trying to make one of the three possible NxP moves work, and failed to consider the less spectacular line of attack I would probably have played OTB, namely 39 c4 dxc 40 d5 as in the game. Can Black simply reinforce the P on d5 with 39 ... Qb7?

Teyss: 39.c4 seems impossible because the square is protected 5 times (yes) but afterwards seems logical considering Black's weaknesses on d5 and e6.

<Brenin> After 39...Qb7 40.cxd5 exd5 the battery on the e file will allow a R and/or the N to invade and if 40...other 41.dxe6.

<al wazir> Yes 41...Kf6 looks like a mistake. Was trying to work out variations but this is too complex for me so used SF which gives Qb5 at +2.5 (6 minutes): the Q can come back to d7 to defend.
After your line the e7 P and the g6 N are very solid and White can play Nd5 followed by Nxf6(+). Black has no counterattack.

Sep-05-21  awfulhangover: I started with 39.Nxd5, it seemed right. 39.c4 was never in my tiny brain.
Sep-05-21  Brenin: <Teyss>: Yes, after 39 c4 Qb7 40 cxd5 exd5 41 Qa3, threatening a discovered check along the e-file, Black's N on d6 is heading for the knacker's yard, and his K will soon follow it.

chrisowen: Dog taco bid c4 wins no.
Sep-05-21  agb2002: White is one pawn down.

The rooks x-ray the black king. This suggests 39.Nxd5+ exd5 40.Ng6+ Kd8 41.Nf4 but Black has 41... Qa5 or Qb7 and White's attack seems to vanish.

Another option is 39.Nxf7 but after 39... Kxf7 40.Nxe6 Nxe6 41.Rxe6 Re8 42.Rxd6 Rxe1 43.Qd2 Qa1 44.Qxh6 Rh1+ 45.Kg3 Qe1+ 46.Kf4 Qc1+ Black forces the trade of queens with a winning material advantage.

Also, after 39.Ne(f)g6+ Black can avoid complications with 39... Kf6.

White can try to open the position with 39.c4 but after 39... Kf6 (40... dxc4 41.d5 c3 42.Qc2 Nb5 43.Qd3 and the position of the black king looks more worrying than the c-pawn: 43... c2 44.d6+) 40.cxd5 Rc2 the black pieces seem to gain too much activity (41.Qb1 Nb5).

White can protect c3 with Ne2 and pile up the heavy pieces on the a-file but this looks too slow and Black has Nc8.

I don't know. I'd probably try 39.R3e2 to prepare c4 and if 39... Rxc3 then 40.Nxd5+ exd5 41.Nc4+ (touching the rook on c3 and the knight on d6) 41... Ne6 42.Qxc3 dxc4 41.d5 seems to win an exchange.

Sep-05-21  agb2002: According to DroidFish, I underestimated White's position a lot after 39.c4 Kf6 40.cxd5 Rc2 41.Qb1 Nb5 42.dxe6, about +7.

My move loses practically all the advantage, about +0.6.
