19 Qg4 is crushing with no investment of material. Portisch opted for the more speculative 19 Bxh7+!? Kxh7 20 Qh5+ Kg8 and now continued 21 Ne4! (if 21 Re4? Black has the resource 21..Nxc4 22 Rh4 Qxh4! 23 Rxh4 Nxb2). The game continued 21..f6 (an alternative was 21..Nxc4 witha similar idea: 22 Ng5 Qxg5 23 Qxg5 Nxb2) qhich was met by the excellent 22 Rcd1!

Simagin collapsed here with 22..Rxc4? which lost to the clinical 23 NXf6+ A much sterner defence was 22..fxe5! 23 Bxf5 Rf5 24 Qg6 Qe7 after which White must exchange into an ending of R+2Ps vs B+N.
