An Englishman: Good Morning: Do they still give brilliancy prizes? Because if sound, Svidler's Rook sacrifice would certainly deserve one.
Sep-08-17  ChessHigherCat: I guess the finish could be 41...Rc8 42. Ne5+ Kh5 (Qxe5 43. Qxc8) 43. Nf6+ Qxf6 44. Qxf6, winning the queen.

Or 41....Re7 42. f4 Re8 43. f5+ Qxf5 44. Qxf5+ Kxf5 45. Ncd6+ Ke5 46. Nxe8, winning the rook.

What was really weird about this game was that Svidler was so insistent about giving away his rook (reminds me of the Henny Youngman joke: "Now take my wife...Please!).

Starting from move 22, the only point of Qc2 seems to be provoke Bb5 to win the Rook. There I sort of understand it because he probably wanted to provoke the line 22. Qc2 Bb5 23. e6 Bxc4 24. Qxc4 Kh8 25. exf7 and white is threatening both Kg6# and a fork on e6.

But the rook on a4 is trappable for the next eleven moves! Erdos must suspect it's a trap if Svidler is so desperate to trade the rook for his LSB. Finally black finally deigns to take the damned thing with his 33. Qxa4 (like a "mercy f.") and that seems to set Svidler's final attack in motion.

Is that exchange sacrifice some kind of standard theme in the King's Indian?

An Englishman: Good Evening: <ChessHigherCat>, can't help you with that. I sacrificed an Exchange in the KID exactly once--but I had the Black pieces.
