offramp: A fascinating game which is worth playing through ONCE. So pay attention when you <do> play through it.

Napier comes up with an original queen offer in the Evans Gambit. He has seen that Black is forced to give back the queen.

Mieses defends himself very well. Even after most of the pieces are exchanged he is under attack. He manages to reach an ending a pawn up, but soon material is level.

29. f4!

But 10 moves later...

39. a3! Zugzwang! Or, rather, a squeeze.

With the reduced material the game could still be drawn, but poor Mieses, who was never young, must have got tired.

43...Ke3? <43...Nc6 is an improvement.>

44...Nd7 was also an error: ...Nf7 was better, aiming to stop the pawn when it reaches h5.

Both players played very well. Napier showed a tremendous will-to-win.
