Mar-30-19  sudoplatov: White has two possible threats, e5 and d5, perhaps he values having two threats or is hoping to execute both.
Mar-30-19  Ulhumbrus: One justification for 22 g4 is that Black has a knight on the rim. The justification may be insufficient unless the attack succeeds.
Mar-30-19  ChessHigherCat: What about Ne5? Black can't play Qxd4 because of Qxf7+
Mar-30-19  sudoplatov: White's Ne5 helps with the Knight but doesn't (quickly) activate the d3 Bishop (unless Nxf7 or the like is possible.) On the other hand, Black's Knight is a bit offside. I think White must try an attack; more space, lead in development, but Black has the Queenside Majority for the Endgame. White's got enough pieces for the attack (just barely) and hast the possibility of getting an advanced Passed Queen Pawn which may allow transposition into a winning Ending. Also, on White' e5, the Black Knight may not make it over to d5 for defense.
Mar-30-19  ChessHigherCat: Thanks <sudoplatov>. You've made incredible progress in English, by the way.
Mar-30-19  Gypsy: <JimNorCal: I wonder if the players keep one eye on Fabiano's game. If he only draws there is less pressure on them to take risks.> Doubt Fabiano will draw. He clearly is playing for a win and he already has a quite strong position already: Protected advanced b-pawn and fine piece play to come with it. In contrast, Black has two powerful rooks on the e-file, but his doubled d-pawns interfere with his overall piece coordination. (Just my -2c-)
Mar-30-19  BOSTER: Certainly white can play g4 because black king has not enough defenders.
Mar-30-19  Gypsy: <BOSTER: Certainly white can play g4 because black king has not enough defenders.> That Na5 looks badly offside, but Na5-c6-e7 takes only 2 tempi.
Mar-30-19  parmetd: Looks very drawish.
Mar-30-19  sudoplatov: Does look drawish. I don't see how White can make progress without allow Black to run the Queenside Pawns.

Caruana does seem to have a nice advantage though it's a bit complicated for me.

Mar-30-19  sudoplatov: Perhaps a three-way tie for first.
Mar-30-19  beenthere240: So far my prediction of the frozen e and d pawns has been borne out.
Mar-30-19  beenthere240: In just 5 more moves a draw offer will be legal.
Mar-30-19  Gypsy: <25.a3 Ne7> Black is not set to take over, but can certainly withstand anything that White throws his way. I see this as a complete ==.
Mar-30-19  ChessHigherCat: That's why he's been stagnating the whole game.
Mar-30-19  beenthere240: A very cheesy draw by repetition. They should both be fined 1/2 a point.
Mar-30-19  Ulhumbrus: Perhaps Nakamura did not find a way to prosecute an attack successfully whether by e5 or by g5
Mar-30-19  sudoplatov: Looks even. Neither side can achieve an advantage by force.
Mar-30-19  Gypsy: An energetic win by Mr. Gareev.
Mar-30-19  ChessHigherCat: I don't usually complain about draws but it was criminally passive not pushing e5 during the whole game.
Mar-30-19  sudoplatov: Pushing e5 allows N-c3-e7-d5 and White has little.
Mar-30-19  ChessHigherCat: Now, but it's been an option since move 15.
Mar-30-19  ChessHigherCat: I never liked the idea of pushing d5 because the isolated d-pawn would be so weak.
Mar-30-19  sudoplatov: That's the problem in the semi-Tarrasch. White may push d5 and get an advanced but isolated Passed Queen Pawn. Or, White may push e5 with good attacking opportunities, no Knight on f6, White's King Bishop's lines cleared, etc. Sometimes both can be done. Black can try to simplify and used the 2-1 Queenside Majority (which can run very fast). Thus it's a good opening for both sides.
Mar-31-19  Ulhumbrus: The game Rubinstein vs Schlechter, 1912 suggests that White may gain winning chances by the advance g4, h4 and g5 if White has exchanged queens and controls the c file, while the game Rubinstein vs Schlechter, 1918 suggests that White may gain winning chances from the advance d4-d5 if White has a lead in development.
