An Englishman: Good Evening: So this is how Caruana plays when faced with one of his favorite defenses. 5...Nf6 is probably sound, but it doesn't look that good to these ignorant old eyes. After 10.Be2 it seems that Black must either acquiesce to a cramped position or (as in the game) acquiesce to weakened pawns.
Mar-30-19  sudoplatov: Caruana did use d4 like a traffic circle.
Mar-30-19  sudoplatov: Chess365 has only one game with 10.Be2 (draw after 10....Bf5), Grischuk vs. Giri 2012.
Mar-31-19  mrl: Black gets lost trying to stop the white queen side pawns.

Stockfish prefers 24...Ba4, blocking the black a pawn. And only eventually, maybe ...a6

And then 27...Bd8 is a clear mistake. 27...Ra8 prevents b5

Mar-31-19  sudoplatov: It's interesting to note that Caruana puts his Bishop in front of the Double Isolani rather than Nimzovich's suggestion of using Knights as blockaders (not to mention the relationship of Bishops to Knights as Crusaders.)

It seems as if the Bishop is preferable in this case as the Bishop isn't restricted. The Double Isolani restricts the Knight; Doubled Pawns do defend lots of territory. I haven't seen this come up before.
