  MissScarlett: Nottingham Review, October 16th 1840, p.8:

<The following are the moves in the great game of chess, lately played by correspondence between Mr. S. Newham, of the Nottingham Club, the best player in the Midland Counties, and Mr. Harry Wilson, of the Isle of Wight, Chess King of Hampshire. Great skill and caution are displayed throughout; and the game was drawn. The second game has advanced nearly forty moves, and we understand bids fair to terminate in favor of our townsman.>

<Thomas Newham>, we hardly knew ye...

As suspected, the Notts player is Samuel Newham.

The <Observer> source given, which is simply a reprint of the score and notes in <Bell's Life> of October 4th, doesn't specify <Thomas>, so its provenance remains mysterious.

Monday, October 5, 1840, is correct.

"A Monday Afternoon Edition of The Observer is regularly published sufficiently early for the Newsstand to send by the General Post".
