Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-01-20  SChesshevsky: Irina looks to have been playing some good world-class chess for the last year now. So a well deserved championship.

This one was tricky though. Foisor goes for the early Bg5 hindering of the KID and Irina pushes the ...h6 and ...g5 likely weakening the kingside. Then Sabina-Francesca springs the 12. Nxg5 sac. A novelty?

But is there enough compensation? Certainly looks like it at first glance. Two pawns for the piece, uncomfortable black king, nice attacking position for the queen and eventualy rook on the d-file.

It's shown, however, that those plusses might be more illusion than reality. Looks hard for the extra pawns to translate into a passed pawn, the king amazingly finds a comfortable home on c7 and b8, and the queen finds it difficult to find a good square to continue the attack.

Guessing if that if any one of those factors weren't in play, white might've scored an impressive win. Can a computer find a white win after 12. Nxg5?

Nov-01-20  Granny O Doul: Maybe White missed 17...Ne5. I thought Black looked good after that.
Nov-07-20  James J. Henderson: Maurice Ashley, while the game was in progress, observed that 14...Kd7 was a better choice. The move 14...Bf6 allowed an immediate 15.O-O-O, preventing 15...Kd7. The game might have proceeded 15...e6 16.f4 Qe7 17.e5 Bg7 18.Ne4 Bd7 19.Nxg5 O-O-O 20.Nxf7 Be8 21.Bxe6+ Kc7 22.Qf5, with White clearly better. After Ashley's suggested 14...Kd7, the Black king can escape to c7, and it seems White does not have enough compensation for the sacrificed bishop.

Much respect to Foişor, however, for an ambitious attack that's very difficult to defend.
