optimal play: <offramp: The ockers from Launceston played a lot of pawn moves in the opening. The toffs from Green Ponds played purposefully, invading on the f-file.>That's probably a pretty accurate description of the respective club members if the quality of their play is anything to go by.
<Did they really play 22.Bf3 here?>
Yep.
<(To be clear, if there has been an error, I do not believe User: optimal play was at fault. It was probably the newspaper.)>
Thank you for that vote of confidence in my transcription ability.
The only transcription errors in the newspaper were White's 15th & 16th moves which were reversed, and Black's 21st & 22nd moves which were also reversed.
g3 obviously must precede Bg2
And Qc8 logically must precede dxc4
The newspaper had those moves reversed which I ascertained must be a publication error, or perhaps the order of the correspondence slips got a bit muddled up before print.
22.Bf3 is as per the publication.
<22. King's Bishop to King's Bishop's 3rd square.>
As <Granny O Doul> pointed out, 22.Bf3 must have been the move played since the much better 22.Bh3 does not allow for 23.Bxb7
