Phony Benoni: Annotators love games where one side wins a queen for a rook and minor piece. THey can then print the rest of the game without notes since no commentary is necessary, or even slap down "And wins" and move on to a more interest ing.

But it's not that easy. , especially when you're a weaker player up against an experience, powerful master like Hanauer.

Black gets his queen tangled uup, and feels it the better part of valor to give her up. But then he shows his true strength, keeping his pieces in perfect circles of coordination and giving White no end of headaches as he tries to make progress. For much of the game, Knorr seems unable to do anything but move his queen one square at a time.

Finally, Black threatens mate. White stops it, but since this game was played in New Jersey he promptly forgets about it.
