Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-20-21  Olavi: During the game I wondered whether 44.Nxf5+ would be a draw.
Jan-21-21  Olavi: Without the f2- or h3-pawn, 44.Nxf5+ gxf5 45.Rxf5 would lose, confirms the tablebase. But playing through some variations it gives with just the h3 pawn, it looks like there is no hope without playing the rook to h2, aided by the bishop (as you would expect). So tentatively I suggest that with the additional pawn on f2 it might have been a pretty dead draw...

Or is there a way to concentrate everything on the poor thing on f2 and capturing it, without allowing a rook exchange? I think the black king needs to trek to e1...

Jan-26-21  Olavi: In the post game interview Carlsen says "if I don't blunder, I probably don't win, but I get to torture him for a long time". So he didn't realize that his 43...Rd7 allowed an immediate draw. I'm baffled that I don't see 44.Nxf5+ mentioned on the websites I usually visit; perhaps because it's not among the top choices of the engines?

Or at least Stockfish doesn't seem to be able to make progress, even if I give black all reasonable activity. That's not conclusive evidence, so it might just be egg on my face.

Apr-07-21  DouglasGomes: Sacking the knight should not work, <44. Nxf5+ gxf5 Rxf5 Kg6> seems to be winning for Black. With the help of tablebases, Stockfish is able to win one pawn at least and thus the game (White king on e1 should not save the game). Some disaster scenarios:

Last moves were <Ra2 Ke4>. Henceforth, White's rook struggles to use the f3 square (from where it defends both pawns) and the third rank in general.

Dec-12-21  DouglasGomes: Jan Gustafsson and Peter Leko were skeptical that White could be ever worse after 18. a4. After all, White did "nothing wrong". Magnus played the engine line and got an advantage.
