Nov-24-23  mel gibson: I also chose the text ply 15. Rxe7+

Stockfish 16 plays a different ply:

15. h8=Q

(15. h8=Q (h7-h8Q Rf8xh8 Re1xe7+ Qd8xe7 Qd4xh8 Qe7-e5 Qh8-h7+ Kf7-f8 Nc3xb5 Bc8-e6 Nb5-c7 Ra8-c8 Nc7xe6+ Qe5xe6 Ra1-d1 ) +5.82/47 262)

score for White +5.82 depth 47.

If I force SF to play the game ply it's about the same strength but the defence is far stronger (as Black blunders in the actual game.)

15. Rxe7+ Qxe7

(15. .. Qxe7 (Qd8xe7 h7-h8Q Rf8xh8 Qd4xh8 Qe7-e5 Qh8-h7+ Kf7-f8 Nc3xb5 Bc8-e6 Nb5-c7 Ra8-c8 Nc7xe6+ Qe5xe6 Ra1-d1 Rc8-c5 Qh7-d3 b7-b5 g2-g3 Kf8-e7 Kg1-g2 )
-5.73/49 564)

score for Black -5.73 depth 49.

Nov-24-23  Allderdice83: I didn't see the mating web that results after 15 ... Kxe7. 15 ... Qxe7 is better, but after 16. h8=Q Rxh8 17. Qxh8, White is up two pawns with three connected kingside passers. Eg., b6 18. Kf1 Bb7 19. Qh7+ Kf8 20. Qxe7+ Kxe7 21. g3
Nov-24-23  Brenin: My first reaction on seeing this position was to wonder how one of White's central Ps reached h7 so soon. When I played through the game I realised that Black, a 2400+ rated IM, showed remarkable generosity in his opening play, with moves such as 9 ... f6, 12 ... c6 and 13 ... cxb5 which left his K completely exposed.

The exchange sac 15 Rxe7+ is easy to see, but after 15 ... Kxe7 I would have preferred 16 h8=Q, since 16 ... Rxh8 allows 17 Qg7+ Ke6 18 Re1+ with mate as in the game, whereas the immediate 16 Qg7+ played allows the defence 16 ... Rf7 17 Re1+ Be6 which leaves White with some work to do.

Nov-24-23  Allderdice83: Regarding the opening, according to Stockfish, White's 5. d4 is inaccurate, c3 is best (not surprising, generally White plays c3 to prepare for d4 in the Ruy Lopez).

Black is equal after that until playing 8 ... d6?!; Black should play more aggressive 8 ... d5. Then, Stockfish gives 9. Nc3 dxe4 10. Nxc6 Nxc6 11. Nxe4 Bf5 12. Qxd8 Rfxd8 13. Bg5 Bxb2 14. Rab1 as equal.

Exchanging on d4 only helps White, bringing the queen unopposed to a strong central square and the critical long diagonal.

After 13. fxg6 Black must play 13 ... hxg6. After 14. Bd3 d5, White's best is 15. g4, which seems a little hard to find. 13 ... h6 or h5 are less good, but not as bad as cxb5?.

offramp: I like Mr Cobb, but he seems to play the Danish Gambit as black and after castling.

9...f5 is a bit of a loosener. White played 10. exf5 then 13. fxg6 and 14. gxh7. Scorchio!

Nov-25-23  DouglasGomes: Position after 12... c6 is a nice test position. 13. fxg6 is by far the best move.
