Oct-11-21  cro777: Peaceful birthday!

Wesley So celebrated his 28th birthday.

After spending almost 15 minutes, Caruana played 18...e5?! instead of the correct move 18...f5. (He later confessed that he thought a lot about pushing the f-pawn, but decided on the sharp 18...e5).

Position after 18...e5 19.dxe5 Re6

Here, 20.Rd1 was winning (the king can escape via f1). Wesley played 20.exd6 and a perpetual check followed.

About missing a chance, Wesley said afterwards: "I decided to play it a bit safe today, because the last thing you want is to lose on your birthday!"

PawnSac: That's a good quality! Wesley is able to inject humor into the interview to deflect awkwardness. The other thing is that his birthday comment plants the idea into the interviewers "don't beat him up over a missed opportunity. It's his birthday!"

lol
