Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-18-23  agb2002: White has a bishop and a pawn for a rook.

The position of the black king invites to play 21.Qh4:

A) 21... Bxd7 22.Bd3+ Kg8 23.Bxf6 Re8 (23... Qxf6 24.Qh7#; 23... g6 24.Qh8#) 24.Qh7+ Kf8 25.Qh8#.

B) 21... Qxd7 22.Bf5+ Kg8 23.Bxd7 Bxd7 (23... Nxd7 24.Qxh3 wins decisive material) 24.Bxf6 gxf6 25.Ne4 (or 25.Ke2) is winning.

C) 21... Nxh7 22.Bxd8 Rcxd8 (22... Bxd7 23.Be7 + - [Q vs r]) 23.Qxh3 + - [Q+P vs r].

  chrisowen: Pressure height balance
For horrible it is h4 aids x
Aug-18-23  Brenin: Nigel was only 13 when he played this game, and not yet an IM. White missed (or rejected) 11 Rxg7+ Nxg7 (Kh8 12 Rxh7+ leads to a quick mate) 12 Qg4 Qf6 13 Bg5, trapping the Q (13 ... h5 14 Qg1), but after 11 Bg5 Black's position was hopeless.
Aug-18-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: B position is complicated. Simple move like: 21. dxc8=Q Qxc8 22. Bxf6 gxf6 23. Qh4 Qg4 24. Qxg4 Bxg4 25. Bc2; It is not "winner" but gives an extra ♗.

My selection is naturally (many): 21. Qh5. Keep on the fire of ♖ c8, threates Bxe4 or f5+, according to Black moves, followed by Bxf6 abd Qh7#. This is in the clouds.

Eg. 21... Bxd7 22. Be4+ Kg8 23. Bxf6 Bf5 24. Bxf5 Qxf6 25. Qh7#. Or 21... Qxd7 22. Bf5+ Kg8 23. Bxd7 (This captures the ♕, I love it!) Bxd7 24. Bxf6 gxf6 25. Qxf6 Rc6 26. Qe7. Other possibility 21... Rc7 22. Be4+ Kg8 23. Bxf6... how to avoid 24.Qh7#?

It doesn't save moves like: 21... Bg4 22. Be4+ Bh5 23. Bxf6 Rc5 24. Bxd8... otherwise, Qxh5 and mate next. Also in the above line: 23... Qxf6 24. Qxh5+ Qh6 25. Qxh6+ gxh6 26. dxc8=Q Rxc8, or 25. Qf5 Qh4+ 26. Kf1 Qf6 27. Qxf6 gxf6 28. dxc8=Q Rxc8... with 2 extra pieces.

Aug-18-23  mel gibson: That was obvious.

Stockfish 16 says:

21. Qh4

(21. Qh4 (Qa4-h4 Nf6xh7 Bg5xd8 Bh3xd7 Bd8-e7 Kh8-g8 Nd2-e4 Bd7-e6 Be7xf8 Nh7xf8 Ra1-d1 Rc8-e8 Rd1-d8 Re8xd8 Qh4xd8 b6-b5 Ke1-d2 b5-b4 a2-a4 b4xa3/ep b2xa3 Be6-d7 Ne4-g5 f7-f6 Ng5-e4 Bd7-c6 Ne4-g3 Bc6-d7 Qd8-a8 f6-f5 Ng3xf5 a7-a5 Nf5-e7+ Kg8-f7 Ne7-d5 Kf7-g8 Nd5-f6+ g7xf6 Qa8xa5 Nf8-e6 Qa5-d5 Kg8-h8) +6.15/40 175)

score for White +6.15 depth 40.

NM JRousselle: I'm not a fan of puzzles that ask to find the best move when simple moves work. In this example, taking the rook on c8 also wins easily.
Aug-19-23  Mayankk: The position looks abysmal for Black with an open h file, a pinned Knight and a Rook under threat. Any number of moves will possibly win. 21 Qh4 seems the easiest as it makes use of the open h file and discovered check threats. If 21 ... Qxd7/ Bxd7, 22 Bg6+ Kg8 23 Bxf6 and it's mate next at the h7 square.

Nice to have an easy bonus puzzle on weekends.

Aug-19-23  Refused: 21.Qh4 and this mating attack will put black out of his misery.
