Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-20-23  Brenin: 36 Qxh7+ Rxh7 37 Rxe8 mate.
Nov-20-23  Mayankk: I got distracted by 36 Rxe7 Nxf5 (36 ... Rxe7 37 Qc8+ is worse) 37 Rxe8+ Nf8 38 Rxf8+ Kh7 39 Bxf5+ Kh6 40 Rh8#

It felt nice to have solved a tricker-than-usual Monday line, only to open the text and see 36 Qxh7+ ...

Nov-20-23  mel gibson: Good old Queen sac Monday. LOL
Nov-20-23  geeker: I didn't see this at first, but once I realized the first move had to be a check (otherwise ...Nf3+ spoils), the Monday Q sac fell into place.

takebackok: No think Queen sack Monday yea.
Nov-20-23  saturn2: A composition would be without the Rg2 which is not needed for mate

An Englishman: Good Evening: Easy but interesting variant of the back rank mate.
Nov-20-23  Damenlaeuferbauer: After long pondering, the Azeri IM Vugar Asadli finally found the mate in 2 moves with the nice deflection queen sacrifice 36.Qxh7+!,Rxh7 37.Rxe8#.
Nov-20-23  alussinan: <Mayankk> Your finish is quite nice too and a little hard for a monday. Nice one !

  Teyss: Hi Mayankk,

I also considered 36.Rxe7 and thought it would mate albeit in more moves, but alas 36...Qd6+ 37.Kh1 Qxe7! and both Qs are en prise.

White still wins after 38.Qh5 but it's much slower: SF gives 38.Qh5 Qe1+ 39.Rg1 Nxc2 40.Rxe1 Rxe1+ 41.Kh2 (+6.4 at 29 ply)

Nov-20-23  Brenin: <Mayankk, Teyss>: After 36 Rxe7 Qd6+ 37 Kh1, 37 ... Nxf5 looks stronger than Qxe7, e.g. 38 Rxe8+ Nf8 39 Bxf5 Qd1+ 40 Kh2 (or Rg1 Qf3+) Qd6+, and Black seems to have enough checks for a draw.

but what if you didn't know what day of the week it is? Knowing it's Monday can be too big a hint! First thing you look for is a big Q sac! ..and you keep looking till you find it!

When I log in I look at the front page (unless it is black to win, then I load the game and flip the board). I pay no attention to the day of the week. I treat every puzzle the same. Find the win, regardless. It's more challenging that way.

Imagine you're playing a real OTB game. You're studying the board and a friend walks by and whispers.. "You know it's queen sac Monday, right?" That would be a huge help (and against the rules).

And btw there have been Mondays without a Q sac. I'd be content if CG paid no attention to the days. After selecting 7 games of progressing difficulty, mix them up randomly. No hints!

gawain: Though this is a Monday, I did not begin by trying a queen sac. I glimpsed d back rank mate taking shape and only then looked for a way to get the e7 rook out of the way. At least I think that's how it went. It all happened in a few seconds.
Nov-20-23  Whitehat1963: If this were a Saturday or Sunday puzzle, would most of us consider the Queen sac so quickly?
Nov-20-23  whiteshark: 36.Qxh7+ Rxh7 37.Rxe8#, and that's it.
