Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-07-22  Brenin: My first thought was 21 Nxc5 dxc5 22 Qe5+ Qd6 23 Qxh8, and if 23 ... Qd2+ then 24 Kf3 Qd3+ 25 Kg4 e5+ 26 Kh4 and the White K is safe for the time being. However, 21 Nxd6 Qxd6 (Kxd6 22 Rhd1+) 22 Rhd1 Nd5 23 cxd5 also looks strong.
Sep-07-22  mayankk06: I saw 21 Nxd6 Qxd6 ( 21... Kxd6 22 Rd1+ Kc7 23 Qe5+ is no better) 22 Rd1 Qe7/Qf8 23 Qe5+ Qd6 24 Qxd6#

In my euphoria, I didn't notice the 22 .. Nd5 defence, but it leads to material equality with continued attack at worst. So doesn't seem like a tricky line.

Sep-07-22  jrredfield: I too went first with 21. Nxc5. It does lead to a slight advantage for White.

21.♘xc5 e5 22.♘d3 ♗f5 23.♖he1 ♖ad8 24.♖b5 ♔b8 25.c5 ♗xd3 26.♕xd3 dxc5 27.♕e4 ♖d2+ 28.♔g1 ♖xa2 29.fxe5 ♖d2

I also looked at 21. Rhd1 which has some potential after 21.♖hd1 d5 22.♘d2 ♖h7 23.♕e5+ and then a Queen exchange which appears to slightly favor White in the endgame.

But Komodo Dragon prefers the text move:

Depth 41:

White +7.71: 21.♘xd6 ♕xd6 22.♖hd1 ♖d8 23.♖xd6 ♖xd6 24.♖d1 ♖xd1 25.♕xd1 ♗d7 26.♕h5 ♖e8 27.♕xc5+ ♗c6 28.♕e5+ ♔d8 29.♗xc6 bxc6 30.c5 ♘d7 31.♕d6 ♖e7 32.♕xc6 ♔e8 33.♕a8+ ♔f7 34.♕xa7 ♘f6 35.♕a5 ♘g4+ 36.♔g2 ♖d7 37.c6 ♖d2+ 38.♔h3 ♘f2+ 39.♔h4 ♘e4 40.♕a7+ ♔f6 41.c7 ♘d6 42.♔g4 h5+ 43.♔f3

takebackok: First instinct 21.Nxc5 going for the lose h8 rook. Better second thought 21.Nxd6 right down the center & black is completely cooked.
Sep-07-22  Honey Blend: The quiet 21. ♖hd1 d5 22. ♘d2 threatening ♕e5+ looks fine for White too.

If 22. ... ♕f6 or ♕g7 to defend e5, 23. ♕e3 attacks c5.

Sep-07-22  agb2002: The rook on h8 is defenseless. This suggests 21.Nxc5 dxc5 22.Qe5+ Qd6 23.Qxh8 but Black can create some complications with 23... Qd2+.

A better option seems to be 21.Nxd6:

A) 21... Kxd6 22.Qe5+ Kd7 23.Rhd1+ (or 23.Qxh8) looks crushing.

B) 21... Qxd6 22.Rhd1 Nd5 (22... Qe7 23.Qe5+ Qd6 24.Qxd6#) 23.cxd5 wins a pawn with an overwhelming position. For example 23... Re8 24.Qh5 Re7 25.dxe6 Qxe6 26.Re1 Qf6 27.Qxc5+.

C) 21... Bd7 22.Nxb7 is winning.

D) 21... Rd8 22.Nb5+ Kd7 (22... Kb8 23.Qe5+ wins) 23.Rhd1+ Ke8 24.Qh5+ Kf8 (24... Qf7 25.Rxd8+ wins) 25.Rxd8+ Qxd8 26.Rd1 Qf6 27.Nc7 Rb8 28.Qe8+ Kg7 29.Rd8 is disastrous for Black.

Sep-07-22  mel gibson: I chose 21. Nxc5 and didn't check any other line.

Stockfish 15 says:

21. Nxd6

(21. Nxd6 (♘e4xd6 ♕e7xd6 ♖h1-d1 ♖h8-d8 ♖d1xd6 ♖d8xd6 ♖b1-d1 ♘b6xc4 ♖d1xd6 ♘c4xd6 ♕e2-e5 a7-a5 ♕e5xc5+ ♔c7-d7 g3-g4 ♔d7-e7 ♕c5-e5 ♘d6-f7 ♕e5-c7+ ♗c8-d7 ♗g2xb7 ♖a8-g8 ♗b7-c6 ♖g8-d8 c3-c4 ♔e7-e8 ♗c6-b7 ♗d7-a4 ♕c7xa5 ♗a4-d1 ♕a5-c5 ♘f7-d6 ♗b7-c6+ ♔e8-f8 h2-h3 h6-h5 g4-g5 ♗d1-c2 ♕c5-e5 ♘d6-f7 ♕e5xe6 ♖d8-d2+ ♔f2-e3 ♖d2-d1 ♔e3-e2 h5-h4 ♕e6-e8+ ♔f8-g7 ♕e8-e7 ♔g7-g8) +8.87/42 668)

score for White +8.87 depth 42.

If I force Stockfish to play my choice it is not as strong:

21. Nxc5

(21. Nxc5 Re8 (♖h8-e8 ♘c5-d3 ♘b6xc4 ♖h1-e1 ♖a8-b8 ♔f2-g1 ♕e7-f6 a2-a4 ♗c8-d7 ♘d3-c5 ♘c4-b6 ♘c5xd7 ♘b6xd7 ♕e2-b5 ♔c7-d8 ♖e1-d1 ♔d8-e7 ♕b5-d3 ♔e7-f7 ♕d3xd6 ♘d7-f8 ♕d6-c7+ ♕f6-e7 ♖b1xb7 ♖b8xb7 ♕c7xb7 ♕e7xb7 ♗g2xb7 ♖e8-e7 ♗b7-a6 ♖e7-c7 ♖d1-d3 e6-e5 f4xe5 ♘f8-g6 ♖d3-d6 ♘g6xe5 ♖d6xh6 ♖c7xc3 ♗a6-e2 ♘e5-c6 ♔g1-f2 a7-a5 ♗e2-b5 ♘c6-e5 ♖h6-h4 ♔f7-e6 ♖h4-f4 ♖c3-c2+ ♔f2-g1 ♖c2-c3 ♔g1-g2 ♖c3-c2+ ♖f4-f2 ♖c2-c3 h2-h3 ♖c3-a3) -4.54/39 510)

score for Black -4.54 depth 39.

Sep-07-22  saturn2: Materially equal but lost position at move 20. A consequence of multimoved pieces.

scormus: Ah, looks like my choice, 21 Nxc5, is favourite. It gives W a clear advantage after .... dxc5 21 Qe5+ etc., but B doesn't have to take the N. According to SF W's advantage is about +4 after the better reply 21 ... Re8, compared with about +5 after ... Nxf5. Against the best defense W still has some work to do to realise the advantage. Even after ... dxc5, WQ is temporarily out of place on h8.

Credit to Bareev for seeing 20 Nxd6 was more decisive.

Sep-07-22  parch: My first choice was 21.N:c5 eyeing the Black rook on h8.
Sep-07-22  paavoh: My first idea was 21. Nxc5 dxe5 22. Qe5+ and 23. Qxh8, then realized that 21.Nxd6 Qxd6 might be stronger as, after 22. Rhd1, the Black Queen would have to step away or give the Knight back without displacing the White Queen to the h8 corner.
Sep-07-22  AlicesKnight: Found the not-too-hard 21.Nxd6. After ... Qxd6, 22.Rhd1 any Q move allows White's Q to e5, so Black must return the N and rescue the KR, but White's position will still be winning.
Sep-07-22  TheaN: Was eyeing 21.Nxc5, didn't like it at first glance and decided on <21.Nxd6 +->. What has been said about these moves I can't add to. 'Missed' the Re8 defense but Black's queen side pieces aren't doing anything so White wins in multiple ways.

In a sense, Nxd6 is simplification. White doesn't win anything directly, as after 23.cxd5 both colors lost a knight, but because Black has two pieces that are idling it's completely winning.

Sep-07-22  GlennOliver: <Brenin> My first thought was 21 Nxc5 dxc5 22 Qe5+ Qd6 23 Qxh8 ...

As also cited by other psoters, and was also my own first thought.

However, Black refuses the Knight capture on c5 and instead plays the calm 21. ... e5, leading to a very drawish game progression.

Sep-07-22  dhotts: Very strange game between two GMs. It was as if the two GMs kept moving pieces aimlessly until one (Kosten) made a mistake. Starting from the opening all the way through to the end, it was some of the most counter-intuitive chess I've seen from GMs???....Comments?
Sep-07-22  EasilyConfused: @agb2002 in your line D I think 26 Rd1 fails to 26..QxR. It looks like White has a winning position but I cannot see how to force the win
Sep-07-22  Brenin: <GlennOliver>: <However, Black refuses the Knight capture on c5 and instead plays the calm 21. ... e5, leading to a very drawish game progression.>

I think that after 21 Nxc5 e5 22 Nd3 and 23 Rhe1 White has a significant advantage, even if Black regains the lost P with 22 ... Nxc4. If he doesn't, then c5 looks strong.

Sep-08-22  Brenin: <EasilyConfused> < @agb2002 in your line D I think 26 Rd1 fails to 26..QxR.>

The R on d1 is protected by the Q on h5. White is winning comfortably, e.g. 26 ... Qf6 27 Nc7, threatening both Nxa8 and Qe8+.
