An Englishman: Good Evening: At a few points in this game, it appeared to my poor old eyes that *both* players had lost positions at the same time. One of the joys of ignoring the silicon monsters' in-game evaluations consists of the pleasure of bafflement.

0ZeR0: Wild game! It appears that after 21.Nb6+ black could have played 21...Qxb6 22.Qxb6 Bc5+ 23.Qxc5+ Nxc5 24.fxe4 and the game continues.
Mar-02-22  phantasmagorium: Nice find, <0ZeR0>! 21... Qxb6 is definitely better than Shirov's actual move, isn't it? I wonder if Black may even be able to consolidate and win with his "a" pawn.

Shirov is apparently no longer the tactics monster he used to be. Oh well... everyone gets old eventually.

Atterdag: <... Shirov is apparently no longer the tactics monster he used to be. Oh well... everyone gets old eventually.> True, but age comes differently to an individual. Shirov is only 49 years old, about the same age when Botvinnik beat Tal in the return match.

Shirov's strength has declined significantly over the past ten years or so. Still, occasionally he's able to entertain with the fireworks he's known for.

Mar-02-22  Ulhumbrus: 21 Nb6+ clears with tempo the square c4 for the fork Bc4. This suggests that the move 21 Nb6+ counts as a potential threat and that suggests that the move 20...Nxb3 exposes Black to this potential threat. That suggests in turn that the capture 19...axb3 exposes Black to this potential threat and that the move 18...Qe6 also exposes Black to this potential threat.
